Should there be a minimum age for social media?
Worum es bei dieser Frage geht
Most major platforms already require users to be 13. That rule mostly comes from US children's-privacy law, not from research on child development, and it is rarely checked. Since Australia's ban on accounts for under-16s took effect in December 2025, governments across Europe and elsewhere have been debating whether to set a higher legal age, how to enforce it, and who should be responsible: platforms, parents or the state.
The disagreement is less about whether social media can harm young people and more about what to do about it. Should there be a hard age limit, controls on how platforms are designed for minors, parental choice, or no special rules beyond what already exists? Each answer involves trade-offs between child safety, privacy (since checking age often means checking ID), teenagers' own rights, and whether a rule can be enforced in practice.

Set a legal minimum age of 16
Governments should ban social media accounts for under-16s by law, and platforms should be required to take reasonable steps to keep them off, with fines if they don't.

Am besten belegte Begründung
Platforms profit from young users, so they should carry the cost of keeping them off.
Regulate platform design for minors instead of banning access
Young people can keep accounts, but platforms must switch off the features most linked to harm for users under a set age.

Am besten belegte Begründung
Bans are easy to get around, so rules that apply to every account protect more teens than a ban does.
