How should France respond to the school protests?

What this question is about
Since 21 September 2026, French high-school pupils have blockaded their schools over teachers who are never replaced, classes of 32 to 36, crumbling buildings and the pressure of the Parcoursup university admissions system. What began at one lycée in Créteil has spread to more than a thousand schools, been joined by universities and unions, and on 17 October drew 550,000 people onto the streets by the government’s count, alongside “yellow vest” activists. Clashes have injured hundreds of police officers and several teenagers seriously, and more than 6,700 minors have been taken into custody.
The government has promised 3,000 substitute teachers and proposals by the end of October, and blames the far-left party LFI for stoking the violence, which LFI denies. The disagreement is about what comes first and what France can afford: a large investment in schools while the country runs one of the highest deficits in the EU, a firm restoration of order before any negotiation, or reform that moves money within the existing budget.
Positions
3 positions, in no order of merit. Open one for its full case.
End blockades and prosecute violence first; talks on school conditions follow once schools are open again.
3 reasons3 sources4 objections from other positions
Blockades and attacks on schools, prefectures and police can’t be accepted, whatever the cause.
Strongest objection (Leaves something out), for Meet the demands: invest in schools now: The police response has itself caused serious injuries to minors, including a lost hand and a lost eye.
Hire and replace teachers, cut class sizes and repair buildings now, even if that means missing the deficit target in the 2027 budget.
3 reasons2 sources3 objections from other positions
Classes of 32 to 36 pupils and teachers who are never replaced make it impossible for many pupils to learn properly.
Strongest objection (Doesn’t follow), for Reform within the existing budget: Smaller classes everywhere are very expensive, and their effect on results is disputed.
Address the worst shortages by moving money within the education budget and targeting the most overcrowded schools, without new borrowing.
3 reasons2 sources3 objections from other positions
France can’t borrow its way out: its deficit and debt are among the highest in the EU.
Strongest objection (Doesn’t follow), for Meet the demands: invest in schools now: Underfunding schools now creates larger costs later, in lower skills and lost growth.

Schools must reopen so the pupils who aren’t protesting don’t lose weeks of teaching.

Extra money should go first to the most overcrowded schools rather than being spread evenly across the country.
